society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Legal education is the study of law principles, practices, and theory. People seek this knowledge for many different reasons. Some students want to become lawyers in a specific area. Others study law to help them in business or politics. Current lawyers also use education to learn new things. They may seek advanced training or learn about recent changes.

There are many ways to study these important rules. Most people start with a primary law degree. In many Commonwealth countries, this is an undergraduate Bachelor of Laws. In the United States and Canada, it is a graduate Juris Doctor. Some students also earn advanced degrees like a Master of Law. They might even earn a PhD or an SJD. These higher degrees allow for very deep research and study.

Learning about law has a very long history. It began in the time of the Roman Republic. At first, people studied rhetoric to become advocates. Around the third century BCE, Tiberius Coruncanius taught law as its own subject. This created a group of skilled legal experts called jurisprudentes. Later, medieval European universities studied canon and ecclesiastical law. In England, people learned through apprenticeships in the thirteenth century.

Different countries have unique ways to train their lawyers. In Germany, students study at universities for four and a half years. They must pass a First State Examination after their studies. Then, they complete a two-year legal traineeship called a Referendariat. In Australia, many students choose combined degree courses. For example, they might study a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Laws. Some schools like Bond University offer very fast programs.

Legal education connects to many other types of learning. William Blackstone believed students should study many subjects first. He thought studying logic and math would help them. He also suggested studying classical writers and philosophy. This helped students understand the natural laws of the world. This foundation made their later study of law much easier. Learning many things helps a person understand the law better.
