A profession is a special way of working. It is more than just a regular job or a trade. People in a profession belong to a disciplined group. They follow strict ethical standards to be fair and honest. These workers have specialized knowledge that they learned through advanced research and training. They use these skills to help other people in their community.

Most professionals provide services that are objective and disinterested. This means they give advice without looking for extra business gains. They work for a set payment for their expert help.

Becoming a professional involves a specific process called professionalization. An occupation changes into a profession through several important steps. First, it often becomes a full-time job for many people. Then, training schools or university schools are often created. A group might start a local or national association. They also create a code of ethics to guide behavior. Finally, state licensing laws might be made to control the work. These steps help ensure that every worker is truly ready.

History shows us how these groups have grown over time. In the medieval and early modern periods, there were only three professions. These were called the learned professions: divinity, medicine, and law. In the United States, surveying was the first job to reach professional status. Famous leaders like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were land surveyors. After surveying, medicine, law, and dentistry became recognized professions. Later, jobs like architecture and accounting joined this group.

Many different jobs became professions by the year 1900. These included mechanical engineering, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine. Other groups like psychology, nursing, and teaching also joined in. Even librarianship and social work became recognized by that time. Some professions have very long periods of study. Architecture is a good example of this. Even though some professions change in power, their prestige often stays stable. This happens even if they require more formal education over time.

To keep things running well, professional bodies manage these jobs. They have two main tasks to help the public. They create and review the standards for the industry. They also step in if someone does not follow the rules. Some groups, like the College of Physicians, used to rule themselves. Now, many are regulated by national governments or official bodies. For example, teachers in Hong Kong must finish specific university programs. This helps ensure that everyone receiving a service gets high-quality help.
