People in these jobs have special skills. They learn through long years of study. They also take hard tests. Most professionals follow a code of ethics. This is a set of rules to be fair. These rules help them work well for others.

Long ago, there were only three professions. They were medicine, law, and religion. Over time, more jobs became professions. In the United States, land surveying was first. Then came medicine and law. Later, jobs like architecture and accounting joined. By the year 1900, many more jobs had joined. These included nursing, teaching, and pharmacy.

Groups called professional bodies help manage these jobs. They set high standards for workers. They can also give out licenses. A license is a paper that says you are qualified. Some groups rule themselves. Other times, the government helps make the rules. This helps keep the work safe and good for everyone.
