society Maturity 7-9 Next article →

People study many different things at colleges. These groups of study are called academic disciplines. You might know them as fields of study.

There are many kinds of disciplines. Some people study the humanities. This includes art, languages, and philosophy. Other people study the sciences. This includes biology, chemistry, and physics. Some study math or computer science. These are called formal sciences. Others study the social sciences, like how people live together.

Long ago, groups of study were very broad. People were called natural philosophers. As more was learned, the groups became smaller. This helped people become experts. Experts are people who know a lot about one thing. They are also called specialists.

Sometimes, experts work together. This is called being multidisciplinary. They use many skills to solve big problems. For example, a team might use science and art. This can lead to new ideas. Some people think experts will work together even more in the future. They might join many groups to make new knowledge.
