Branches of science

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Science is a way to learn about our world. Scientists study many different things. They group these studies into three main areas.

One area is formal science. This group uses rules and systems. It includes math, which studies numbers and shapes. It also includes logic. Logic is the study of rules for arguments. Other parts include statistics, which is the study of data. These tools help all other scientists work.

Another area is natural science. This group looks at the natural world. It has two main parts. Life science, or biology, studies living things. Physical science studies things that are not alive. This includes physics, which looks at how matter and energy move. It also includes chemistry. Chemistry is the study of matter and how it changes. Earth science is another part. It studies our planet. This includes geology, which is the study of rocks. It also includes oceanography, the study of the ocean.

The last area is social science. This group studies how people act in groups. This helps us understand culture and human behavior. All these sciences work together to help us understand everything.
