Formal science

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some science studies things we can touch. Other science studies ideas. We call this formal science. It does not look at the physical world. Instead, it looks at abstract structures. These are patterns made of rules.

Formal science uses special tools. These tools are made of language. One branch is logic. Logic is a way to think clearly. Another branch is mathematics. Math uses numbers and shapes. There is also statistics. This is the study of data.

Other parts include computer science. This helps us make smart machines. There is also information theory. This studies how we share facts. Formal science helps other scientists too. It gives them tools to describe the world. It helps them make good guesses. Scientists use these rules to find new truths. They start with basic facts called axioms. They use these to find new ideas. We call these new ideas theorems. Formal science helps us understand how rules work.
