Branches of science

Science is a huge way of learning about our world. To make it easier to study, people divide science into three major groups. These groups are called formal sciences, natural sciences, and social sciences.

Formal sciences focus on abstract structures and rules. They use a special way of thinking called a priori methodology. This means they rely on definitions rather than looking at the real world. Natural sciences study the things we see in nature. Social sciences look at how people act in groups and cultures. Together, these groups help us understand everything from tiny atoms to huge galaxies.

Natural science works by observing things and doing experiments. Scientists use these observations to predict what might happen next.

This group is split into life science and physical science. Life science is often called biology. Physical science studies things that are not alive. This includes physics, which looks at matter and energy. It also includes chemistry, which studies how substances change. Earth science is another big part of physical science. It looks at our planet through many different lenses.

Formal science provides the tools that other scientists need.

One important part is mathematics. It studies things like quantity, structure, space, and change. Another part is logic, which studies the rules of arguments. Logic has been studied in philosophy since ancient times. In the mid-19th century, people began studying it in mathematics too. Statistics is another tool used to collect and organize data. There is even a field called information science. This field studies how we collect, move, and protect information.

There are many specific names for these scientific fields.

Geology is an Earth science that studies rocks and how they change. Oceanography is the study of the ocean. Physics is one of the oldest subjects. For a long time, it was part of natural philosophy. During the 16th century, the natural sciences became their own separate research areas. Chemistry is a specialized physical science. It focuses on atoms, molecules, and how they react. Even the study of the human body uses these ideas through biochemistry.

All these different branches often work together. This is called interdisciplinarity.

For example, a scientist might use math to solve a physics problem. This connection helps create applied sciences like medicine and engineering. Some fields even overlap, such as biophysics or quantum chemistry. These special areas use tools from more than one group. By working together, these sciences help us build a complete picture of the universe. They turn many small facts into one big understanding of how things work.
