Math is about finding truths that stay true. These truths do not change even if we do experiments. Mathematicians use pure reason to prove things. They use rules to show why a new idea is correct. This process is called a proof.

There are many different areas in math. Number theory looks closely at numbers and their properties.

Calculus helps us study how things change over time. There is also set theory, which is a foundation for all math. Today, there are over sixty main areas of math. These include things like logic and many new fields.

Math has a very long and interesting history.

A man named Euclid wrote a famous book called Elements around 300 BC. For a long time, math was mostly just arithmetic and geometry. In the 16th and 17th centuries, algebra and calculus began to grow. This helped math and science grow together.

Many famous people helped build these ideas.

Diophantus and al-Khwarizmi were important for early algebra. Al-Khwarizmi showed how to move parts of an equation.

Later, François Viète used variables to represent unknown numbers. In the 17th century, René Descartes used coordinates to link algebra and geometry.

Pierre de Fermat made a famous guess in 1637. It took until 1994 for Andrew Wiles to prove it.

You can see math working in many places.

It helps engineers build strong bridges and buildings. It is used in finance to manage money.

Even games use math, which is called game theory. When you count your snacks, you are using arithmetic. When you look at a window, you see geometry. Math is all around us every single day.
