Theory

A theory is a set of ideas. It helps us explain how things work. People use many ways to make a theory. They use logic and careful thinking. They also use observation and research. This means they watch things closely.

In science, a theory is very strong. It is a well-confirmed way to explain nature. This is different from a hypothesis. A hypothesis is a guess that can be tested. A scientific theory is much more reliable. It is a top way to know things.

Sometimes, new ideas change old ones. This happens when a new theory explains things better. We call this intertheoretic reduction. This is when old ideas fit into new ones. For example, we once thought heat was a fluid. Now, we know heat is actually energy. This is an intertheoretic elimination. The old idea was replaced by a better one.

Scientists use theories to find new facts. They do not use them just to reach a goal. Theories are tools for understanding our world.
