Evidence is what supports an idea. It shows if a thought might be true.

Different groups use evidence in different ways.

In science, people use the scientific method. This is a set of steps to learn facts. Scientists use evidence to test their ideas. For example, seeing how Mercury moves helps prove Einstein's theory.

Scientists like to use things they can see and measure. This makes it easy for others to check their work.

In law, evidence helps solve a case. It can be a person's words. It can also be a physical object or a paper.

This helps people decide if a claim is right or wrong.

Some evidence is very strong. Other evidence is weak. One way to look at this is through math. This is called a probabilistic approach. It says something is evidence if it makes an idea more likely. For example, smoke is evidence of a fire. This is because smoke and fire often happen together. Some thinkers say this is not always perfect. They think there must be a real link between the two.
