philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

A fact is something that is true. It is a real thing that happened. Facts are not just opinions. They stay true even if you do not believe them. You can use books to check them.

There are many kinds of facts. Some are about stars. For example, the Sun is a star. Other facts are about history. One historical fact is that Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. Some facts are about language. One fact is that a sentence can contain words.

Scientists find facts by watching things closely. They use tests to see what is real. This is called the scientific method. They use careful steps to check their work. These facts are based on what they see and measure. They use this to build theories.

History also uses facts. People look at the past to see what occurred. Some people say it is hard to find all the truth. This is because people might have biases. A bias is a way of looking at things that is not neutral. Historians try to be fair when they gather facts. They want to have a conversation with the past.
