A red octagon is a symbol for "stop." You do not even need words to know it. Symbols help us talk and understand the world.

People learn what symbols mean from their culture. This means a symbol can mean different things to different people. For example, an "x" might mean "yes" in one place. But in another place, an "x" might mean "no."

Maps use symbols to show us where things are. A collection of these symbols is called a legend.

Some symbols look like the real thing. A small tree icon can show a forest. Other symbols are just shapes we learn. A red line might show a highway.

Scientists who study symbols use a word called semiotics. This is the study of how signs and symbols work. Symbols can be simple, like letters for sounds. They can also be deep, like art that shows big ideas.
