Visual language

We use more than just words to share ideas. We also use a visual language. This is a way to communicate using things we see. It uses parts like line, shape, and color. It also uses texture, pattern, and scale.

Maps and paintings are great examples.

People have used these signs for a very long time. Long ago, people drew on rocks to tell stories. One old rock has circles and winged figures on it. These marks were messages from a world before written words.

Our brains are built to understand these signs. The eye likes to find patterns. It can even see a whole shape if it is not finished. This is called gestalt theory. This means the whole is more than just its parts.

Art is a big part of this language. Abstract art uses lines and colors to show meaning. It does not need to show a real object. Some people say that learning to use visual signs is just as important as reading or math. This skill is called graphicacy.
