Artists use many tools to make art. They use lines to guide your eyes. Horizontal lines can feel calm. Vertical lines can feel grand. They also use color. Color can show a mood. Artists use value, which is the lightness or darkness of a color. This helps make things look real.

There are special ways to arrange art. The rule of thirds says you should not put things in the middle. Instead, put them near lines that divide the picture into three parts. The rule of odds says that odd numbers of things look better. For example, three subjects can be more interesting than two. Some artists also use space. They might leave empty space in front of a runner. This makes it look like the runner is moving.
