Composition is the way an artist organizes an artwork.

It is different from the subject of a piece. The subject is the person, place, or story being shown. For example, a painting might show Saint George and the Dragon. Even with the same subject, artists can use many different compositions.

This organization helps the viewer understand the work. It can also be called design or formal structure.

Artists use special elements to build their work. These are like a vocabulary for visual art. Lines act as paths for your eyes to follow. Horizontal lines can feel calm and peaceful. Vertical lines can make a scene look grand and tall.

Shapes can be geometric, like a square, or organic, like a leaf. Color is another tool used to create a specific mood. Artists also use value, which is the lightness or darkness of a color. High value is bright like white, while low value is dark like black.

Texture and space are also very important. Texture is how a surface looks like it might feel. An artist can use real materials like sand or wood. They can also create an optical texture, which is just a clever illusion.

Space is the area around and inside objects. In a painting, space is not actually there. Instead, the artist creates an illusion of depth. Positive space is the main subject. Negative space is the empty area around that subject.

There are many techniques to make art look balanced. The rule of thirds is a famous guide. It suggests placing important parts near lines that divide the image into thirds. This keeps the subject from being right in the middle.

Another idea is the rule of odds. This suggests that an odd number of subjects is more interesting. For instance, three people might look more natural than two. Some artists, like Salvador Dalí, actually liked to break these rules to challenge people.

Artists also use space to show movement. The rule of space helps create an illusion of motion. If a runner is in a photo, an artist might leave more space in front of them.

This makes it look like they are moving into that space. Artists also use shapes like triangles to create strength. The painter Paul Cézanne used triangles in his still life works. These tools all help the viewer's eye move through the art.
