Game art design

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Game art design is the art of making everything you see in a video game. This work starts very early in a project during the pre-production phase. Artists begin by making rough sketches of characters, settings, and objects. These early ideas are often called concept designs. Sometimes, game designers make these sketches themselves, and people call this "programmer art."

These drawings act as a guide for the rest of the team. Once the sketches are ready, more artists join to turn them into real graphics. The art helps people decide if they want to play a game. This is because players can see art in previews, but they cannot see the gameplay yet.

There are many different jobs within the world of game art. An art director or lead artist manages the whole team. They make sure all the art looks like it belongs in the same world.

Concept artists work to shape the look of the game using pens, clay, or software like Adobe Photoshop. Storyboard artists then plan how scenes and cameras will move. In 2D games, sprite artists create moving characters using several frames. For 3D games, 3D modellers use software like Blender or Maya to build buildings and vehicles. Environmental artists focus specifically on building the landscapes and the terrain of the game world.

Specialists also help make the game feel alive and real. Texture artists add "skins" to 3D models to give them depth through shading. Animators use programs to make characters and objects move. Lighting artists adjust the brightness and colors to set a specific mood.

Some artists are even more technical. Technical artists act as a bridge between the artists and the programmers. They solve hard problems to make sure the art works with the computer code. This role includes people like riggers, who prepare characters for movement, and VFX artists, who create effects like fire or lasers.

Game art has changed a lot since the very beginning. Early video games had very simple visuals and were often made by just one programmer. In 1974, a game called Maze Wars used simple 3D wireframes. By the late 1970s, more detailed pixel art began to appear. Shigeru Miyamoto was a famous early artist who created Mario and Donkey Kong.

In 1985, the company Microprose hired its first dedicated artist, Michael Haire. As technology improved in the 1980s and 1990s, games gained more colors and better storage. This allowed for 3D art and even full motion video.

Today, many people study game art at universities. Some people learn through general art courses instead. In the United States, the Princeton Review accredits these courses. In the United Kingdom, TIGA is a group that hosts education conferences.

Finding a first job can be quite hard for new artists. In the UK, the number of junior jobs fell from 9% in 2022 to under 3% in 2023. There is also a shortage of technical artists because their job requires many different skills. Despite these challenges, the field continues to grow as hardware becomes more powerful.
