Making a video game is a huge job that blends art and science. It requires many different skills working together at once.

Some people focus on programming to make the game work. Others create the art, such as 3D models and animations. Writers create stories, while others make the music and sounds. A team can be a single person or hundreds of people. Large companies often use publishers to help pay for these big projects.

Most big games follow a specific way of working through different stages. First, a designer creates a concept or a new idea. Next comes pre-production, where they build a prototype to test the game. A prototype is an early version used to see if the idea works. After that, the team enters full-scale production to build the whole game. Sometimes, they enter post-production to polish everything and make it perfect. Some small teams even use early access to get feedback from players.

Game making has changed a lot since the very beginning. In the 1950s, early games like OXO or Tennis for Two were made on huge computers. Commercial games truly began in the 1970s with arcade machines and consoles. For example, the Magnavox Odyssey was the first home console in 1972. In the 1980s, one person could often make a whole game alone. A famous example is the game Pitfall!, which a single programmer created. Today, games are much too complex for just one person to finish.

Costs and times for games have grown very large over the years. In the year 2000, a high-end game cost between 1 and 4 million dollars. By 2023, those same big games could cost over 200 million dollars. Most modern games take between three and five years to complete. Some games take much longer due to many delays. For instance, the game Duke Nukem Forever took fourteen years to release. Another game, Spore, took nine years from its start to its release.

Making games is a way to express art and also make money. Many developers start with small teams to learn how to work. They might make a mobile game, which can take only a few months. Successful developers can use their profits to grow into larger companies. However, many commercial games do not make a profit at all. This is why careful planning and budgets are so important for success. Even with these risks, new independent developers create hits every single year.
