These devices send a video signal to a screen. This signal creates the images you see while playing. Most people use a separate game controller to play. You can find many different types of these machines. Some stay at home, while others go with you.

How a console works depends on its design. Home consoles connect to a television through a power outlet. They use controllers that connect with wires or wireless signals. Handheld consoles are different because they are all-in-one units. They have a built-in screen and a battery inside. This allows you to play them anywhere you go. Hybrid consoles combine these two ways of working. They can plug into a TV or work as a handheld.

People have been making these machines since the early 1970s. Ralph H. Baer created a way to play games on a TV in 1966. This idea led to the Magnavox Odyssey in 1972. Later, Nolan Bushnell and his team at Atari made Pong. They released a home version of that game in 1975. In 1976, the Fairchild Channel F used swappable cartridges. The Atari 2600 made this way of playing games very popular in 1977. Handhelds like the Game Boy arrived much later in 1989.

Consoles change over time in groups called generations. A generation usually lasts about five to seven years. During one generation, consoles have similar technical power.

Companies often sell consoles at low prices to start. They make money later from fees when people buy games. Today, three big leaders lead the market. Sony makes the PlayStation brand. Microsoft makes the Xbox brand. Nintendo makes the Switch consoles.

Modern consoles are very much like home computers. They can even play movies and music from the internet. They use tiny computer chips to create 3D graphics. These chips make the images look real in real-time. Earlier machines used simple parts called printed circuit boards. Now, manufacturers use very small parts to make machines faster. This makes them more powerful but also keeps them affordable. You might recognize these devices from your own living room.
