Video

technology Maturity 9-11 Vital Level 3 Next article →

Video is a way to record and show moving pictures. It can also include sound to go with the images. The word comes from the Latin word "video," which means "I see."

This technology is used everywhere in our world. It helps us learn, play, and share information. We use it for movies, school, and talking to friends online. It is a huge part of how we see the world today.

Video works by showing many still pictures very quickly. This speed is called the frame rate. If you show at least 16 pictures every second, your eyes see motion. This is called persistence of vision. Old cameras used about 6 or 8 frames per second. New professional cameras can show 120 frames per second or even more.

Different systems use different speeds, like NTSC at 29.97 frames per second.

In the past, people used analog video technology. This used electronic signals to show images. In 1951, a team led by Charles Ginsburg made a machine to record these signals. They used magnetic videotape to save the images.

These machines were very expensive at first. In 1956, a recorder cost about US$50,000. Later, in 1971, Sony began selling VCRs to regular people for their homes.

Today, most video is digital. Digital video uses computer files instead of tape. This makes it much cheaper to make and store. It is also easier to send over the internet.

Since 2013, Hollywood has used more digital cameras than film cameras. Digital video can also use special tricks to save space. This is called compression. It helps big files fit onto small devices like smartphones.

Video screens also come in different shapes. This shape is called the aspect ratio. Most TVs are wide, with a ratio of 16:9.

However, many people now watch video vertically on their phones. In 2015, a report showed that vertical video viewing grew a lot. Some video also uses 3D to make images look deep. This can be done with special glasses or even light filters.
