Video is a way to show moving pictures. It can also have sound. The word comes from a Latin word that means "I see."

In the past, people used analog video. This used electronic signals. They could record these signals on magnetic tape.

One team made a machine to record video on tape in 1951. Later, companies sold machines called VCRs to families.

Today, most video is digital. Digital video uses computer files. This makes it easier to store and share. It is also much cheaper. Now, even a smartphone can capture and edit video.

Video works by showing many still pictures very fast. This is called the frame rate. If you show about 16 pictures every second, the eye sees motion. Professional cameras can show 120 pictures per second or more.

Screens also have different shapes. This is called the aspect ratio. Most TVs are wide. But many people now watch vertical video on phones.
