People use this tape to record sound, video, and computer data. It changed how we hear music. Before tape, radio shows had to be live. Tape let people record shows to play later.

Information is kept in tracks. Tracks are long, narrow areas on the tape. Some tracks run straight along the tape. These are called longitudinal tracks. Other tapes use a helical scan. This means the tracks run at a diagonal angle.

Tape can wear out over time. It may start to break down after 10 to 20 years. Some old tapes from the 1970s have a problem. We call this sticky-shed syndrome. It happens when moisture gets into the tape. You can sometimes fix this by baking the tape at a low heat. This lets you read the data one last time.
