Magnetic tape

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Magnetic tape is a special way to store information. It is a long and narrow strip of plastic film. A thin coating sits on top of the plastic. This coating is magnetizable, which means magnets can change it.

This tool allows us to record and play back sound. It can also store video and digital computer data. Magnetic tape changed the way we listen to music and watch shows. It even changed how radio works. Before tape, radio had to be broadcast live. Now, shows can be recorded to play again later.

Information is kept on the tape in long, narrow areas called tracks. These tracks are separate from each other. Sometimes tracks run straight along the length of the tape. These are known as longitudinal tracks. Other tapes use a method called helical scan. In this way, the tracks run at a diagonal angle.

Some tapes use transverse scan or arcuate scanning. These methods help record video on tapes. There is also a way called azimuth recording. This helps reduce the space between tracks. All these ways help store more data.

People first developed magnetic tape in Germany in 1928. A man named Fritz Pfleumer invented it for recording sound. This work was kept secret during World War II. The Allies only found the technology after they invaded Europe. After the war, Americans helped make it popular. Men named Jack Mullin, John Herbert Orr, and Richard H. Ranger brought it to the world.

A famous man named Bing Crosby even invested in a company called Ampex. This helped make the technology work for everyone to use.

Magnetic tape can be used for many different things. People use compact cassettes for music.

Others use VHS tapes to watch movies at home. Computers have used tape since the early 1950s. It is still used today to back up large amounts of data. Some tapes are made specifically for long-term storage. These are called LTO formats. However, most tape begins to break down after 10 to 20 years. This makes it hard to keep things safe for a very long time.

Sometimes, old tapes from the 1970s and 1980s get damaged. This is called sticky-shed syndrome. It happens because moisture gets into the tape's binder. This can make the tape unusable.

You can sometimes fix this by baking the tape at a low temperature. This removes the moisture so you can read the data one last time. Many new things have replaced tape now. Hard disk drives replaced cassette readers in computers. CDs and DVDs replaced audio and video tapes. Still, companies like Sony and IBM work to make tape better.
