A video camera is a tool that captures moving images.

Unlike a movie camera, it does not use film. Instead, it uses electronic ways to see and save pictures. These cameras are used in many different ways. Some cameras show live video to a screen right away. This is helpful for security or military work. Other cameras save the video to a storage device. This lets people watch the video later for analysis.

There are many ways these tools work. Professional cameras often use three sensors. These sensors record red, green, and blue colors separately. Many modern cameras are also camcorders. This means the camera and the recorder are one unit. Some cameras are built for very hard jobs. They might work in high heat or toxic chemicals. Some even go on space probes or satellites. These special cameras can see things humans cannot. They use infrared light for heat sensing or X-rays for medicine.

Learning about cameras involves looking at a long history. Early cameras used a spinning disk called a Nipkow disk. Later, people used tubes to capture images. Vladimir Zworykin made the Iconoscope tube. Philo Farnsworth made the image dissector tube. These tube designs were used for many years. By the 1980s, things began to change. New sensors replaced the old tubes. These sensors are called solid-state sensors. They helped make digital video much more practical.

Important discoveries happened at places like Bell Labs. Scientists there invented the MOSFET in 1959. This led to the creation of semiconductor sensors. The first charge-coupled device, or CCD, was invented at Bell Labs in 1969. Later, Olympus invented the NMOS active-pixel sensor in 1985. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory developed the CMOS sensor in 1993. To save space, cameras use a trick called compression. A method called the discrete cosine transform was proposed in 1972. This helps video fit onto small memory cards.

Recording video has changed a lot over time. In 1927, John Logie Baird tried to record video on discs. This was called Phonovision. In 1951, scientists first tried using tape. Ampex released the first Quadruplex videotape system in 1956. They even made a color system two years later. Sony made the DV-2400 in 1967 to help people record outside. Today, you might use a smartphone to record 4K video. You can even swap lenses using different mounts.
