It can use a light-sensitive material called photographic film. Many modern cameras use an electronic image sensor instead. This technology is very important for many different jobs. It helps people create art and movies. It is also used for science and watching for safety.

Cameras work by using light to make a picture. First, light enters an enclosed box through a lens. The lens is made of glass parts that focus the light.

Next, the camera uses exposure control to manage the light. The aperture is an opening that can get wider or narrower. It changes how much light reaches the sensor. Then, the shutter opens and closes to set the exposure time. This determines how long the light hits the sensitive surface.

People have been working on cameras since the 1800s. Pioneers like Thomas Wedgwood and Nicéphore Niépce helped start this journey. In 1839, the daguerreotype process helped people make cameras for sale. Later, the original Kodak camera was made in 1888. This camera used roll-film to make photography easier. After World War I, Germany became a leader in making precise cameras.

Many different types of cameras exist for different needs. Single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras show the scene through the lens in real time. Large-format cameras are used by professionals for very high detail. In 1952, the Ricohflex III TLR was an affordable option. The Olympus AutoEye came out in 1960 as a 35mm SLR. By 2003, digital camera sales were higher than film sales in the USA.

These phones use something called computational photography. This means they use math and smart software to improve images. They can help with low light or make colors look better. This makes it very easy for everyone to share pictures. You can see how much technology has changed since the first cameras.
