Rangefinder camera

A rangefinder camera is a special tool for taking sharp pictures. It uses a mechanism called a rangefinder to measure how far away a subject is.

This helps a photographer make sure everything in the photo looks clear. Most rangefinders show two different images of the same thing. One image stays still while the other moves when you turn a wheel. When these two images line up and fuse into one, the distance is correct.

Modern digital cameras often use electronic ways to do this automatically. However, many people still love the feel of a real mechanical rangefinder.

How the rangefinder works can seem like a clever trick. In many designs, the rangefinder is built right into the viewfinder window. In older models, the rangefinder and the viewfinder were two separate windows.

Some newer designs are "coupled" to the lens. This means that when the images in the window line up, the lens is already focused correctly. This makes the way it works much faster for the person taking the photo. Without this connection, a photographer would have to read a number and move the lens by hand.

These cameras have a long and interesting history. The very first rangefinders appeared during the twentieth century. The first rangefinder camera to be sold was the 3A Kodak Autographic Special in 1916.

Later, the Leica I helped make accessory rangefinders very popular in 1925. By 1932, the Leica II and the Zeiss Contax I became great successes. These were important because they used 35 mm film. Rangefinder cameras were very common from the 1930s all the way until the 1970s.

Many famous companies have made these cameras over the years. Oskar Barnack developed the Leica screwmount cameras for Ernst Leitz Wetzlar.

Other famous names include Nikon, which made the S-series from 1951 to 1962. In the United States, the Argus C-3 was a very popular and cheap model. Many Japanese companies like Canon, Minolta, and Olympus also made them. Even today, some companies like Cosina and Leica make new models. Some people even collect old ones, like the Nikon S3 or SP models.

Rangefinder cameras have unique traits that make them different from other types. They are often smaller and quieter than SLR cameras. This makes them great for street photography where you do not want to be noticed. Because they do not have a mirror inside, the lenses can be very small.

One hard job for these cameras is taking photos of things very close. This is because the viewfinder is not in the exact same spot as the lens. This causes a small error called parallax. This error means the view you see is slightly different from what the lens sees.
