A projector is an optical device that shows images on a surface.

Most projectors work by shining light through a small, clear lens. Some newer models use lasers to project an image directly. There are even retinal projectors that shine images right onto the eye. Today, most people use video projectors to see moving pictures. These digital tools replaced older types like slide and overhead projectors.

Digital video projectors became very common during the 1990s and early 2000s.

There are different ways these machines work. Some use light to show still pictures, like a magic lantern. Others show moving images, like a modern movie projector. You can even find handheld projectors that use small LEDs.

One way to project is through a camera obscura. This is a natural event where light passes through a tiny hole. The light creates an upside-down image on the opposite wall.

This happens because light travels in straight lines. A smaller hole helps make the image look much sharper.

People have used light for magic and science for a long time. In China, people used magic mirrors during the Han dynasty.

These bronze mirrors had tiny patterns on the back. When light hit the front, the pattern appeared on a wall. Another old invention was the revolving lantern. In China, these were called trotting horse lamps. They used heat from a candle to spin a wheel. This made silhouettes of horses look like they were running.

Many famous thinkers studied how light and images work. The philosopher Mozi wrote about light around 470 BC. Later, the scientist Ibn al-Haytham studied light in dark rooms. In the year 1584, Jean Prevost described lanterns with tiny army figures.

Around 1608, Mathurin Régnier wrote about lanterns used to amuse children. Even the artist Leonardo da Vinci had a sketch for a projecting lantern. He imagined using a lens and a candle to show images.

Projectors connect many different parts of our world. They turn light and shadows into stories we can see. You might see a projector at a movie theater or in a classroom. Some people use them for PowerPoint presentations at work.

Even old traditions like shadow play in Indonesia use these ideas. Shadow puppetry has been around since at least 840 CE. Whether using a laser or a candle, projectors help us share visions.
