Inkjet printing

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

An inkjet printer is a smart tool for making images. It works by spraying very tiny drops of ink. These drops land on many things like paper, plastic, wood, or metal.

Some printers are small and cheap for homes. Others are large and expensive for professionals. In 2008, they were the most common type of printer. By 2019, laser printers actually outsold them.

There are two main ways these machines work. One way is called continuous inkjet, or CIJ. In CIJ, a pump pushes ink through a tiny nozzle. This creates a steady stream of droplets.

A special electric field can pull specific drops out of the stream. These drops are moved to the right spot to print. Most of the ink is actually recycled and used again. This method is very fast and good for marking packages with dates.

The second way is called drop-on-demand, or DOD. This method only sprays a drop when it is needed.

Some printers use heat to make the drops. This is called thermal inkjet printing. A tiny heater makes a bubble in the ink. The bubble grows and pushes a drop out of the nozzle. This is how many Canon printers work. This method is often cheaper to build.

Other printers use a different part for drop-on-demand. They use a piezoelectric crystal, which is a special material. When electricity hits this crystal, it changes shape.

This movement creates pressure that pushes the ink out. This is called piezoelectric DOD. It can use many kinds of ink. It can even use things like solder paste or living cells. This makes it very useful for science and building tiny parts.

People have been working on this for a long time. The idea started in the 20th century. In the 1950s, engineers at Canon and HP worked on it. Ichiro Endo at Canon suggested a "bubble jet" idea. Jon Vaught at HP was working on something similar. In 1982, Robert Howard found a way to use crystals to spit ink.

He started a company called Howtek. His work helped lead to printers that use solid ink. This technology has changed how we make everything from art to medical tools.
