Thermal printing

Thermal printing is a clever way to make images without using ink. Instead of liquid ink, this process uses heat to create marks on special paper.

This paper has a special coating called a thermochromic layer. This layer contains a mix of a dye and a solid material. When the coating gets hot, the dye reacts and changes color.

This change is called thermochromism. Most of these printers only print in black and white. However, some special designs can print a second color, like red, by using different temperatures.

To understand how it works, you can look at the parts inside the machine. A thermal head contains many tiny elements that can get hot.

A rubber roller called a platen moves the paper along. A spring also works to press the paper firmly against the heated head. When the printer is turned on, it sends electricity to the heating elements. The heat makes the paper turn black in specific spots to form a picture. These heating elements are often arranged in a line of very small dots. They can have a resolution of up to 1,200 dots per inch.

People have been using this technology for a long time. Thermal printing was first used in the 1930s for medical recorders. In 1950, a company called 3M used it in the Thermofax copy machine.

Early versions were not very reliable because they destroyed a white dye layer to show color underneath. A better way was introduced by NCR in the 1960s for military use. This newer method used leucopigments, which are much more stable. This change made the printing process much more useful for everyday tasks.

There are many places where you might see these printers today. They are very common in stores for printing receipts and labels.

Because they are small and quiet, they are great for portable tools. They are used at gas pumps and in hospital monitors to show heart rhythms. Some are even used for seafloor exploration to print records of the ocean floor.

In the late 1970s, people used them with early computers like the Atari 8-bit. Even the Game Boy Printer was released in 1998 to print small images.

Thermal printers have many advantages over other types of machines. They are very fast and do not need ink to work. This makes them easy to maintain and very cost-effective. However, they do have some limits to keep in mind. The printed images can fade if they are exposed to too much light. Heat can also cause the paper to darken unexpectedly. This is why you should not use a heat laminator on thermal paper. If you do, the heat will turn the whole page black.
