Laser printing

Laser printing is a special way to make high-quality text and graphics.

It uses electricity and light to put images on paper. This process is called an electrostatic digital printing process. It works by passing a laser beam over a spinning drum. This drum is a cylinder that holds an electric charge. The printer uses this method to create very neat lines. It can even make moderate-quality photographs for people to use.

The way it works happens in several clear steps. First, a part called a charge roller puts a negative charge on the drum.

Next, a laser beam hits the drum as it rotates. This beam is very precise and intense. The light neutralizes the charge in certain spots on the drum. This creates an invisible image made of electricity. Then, a powdered ink called toner is attracted to the drum. The drum moves the toner onto a sheet of paper.

Finally, the paper goes through a finisher to be heated. This heat fuses the toner to the paper so it stays forever.

People have been developing this technology since the 1970s.

A man named Gary Starkweather had a great idea at Xerox. He worked in the product development department there. In 1969, he thought about using a laser to draw images. He later moved to the Palo Alto Research Center, or Xerox PARC. In 1972, he worked with Butler Lampson and Ronald Rider. They added a control system to help the machine work better. This work led to the first real laser printers.

Many famous companies helped bring these printers to the world. The IBM 3800 was the first commercial laser printer in 1976. It was used in data centers for high-volume printing. It could print at a speed of 215 pages per minute.

Later, the Xerox 9700 was released in 1977. Canon made a low-cost desktop version in 1979 called the LBP-10. In 1984, HP released the LaserJet for many people to buy. This printer used an engine made by Canon. Apple also released the LaserWriter in 1985. These machines changed how businesses and homes work.

You might see laser printers in many places today. They are ubiquitous, which means they are found almost everywhere. They are much faster and better than older types of printing. In the past, printers were very expensive because memory chips cost a lot. Now, they are much cheaper and can print very clearly. Some printers can print at 1200 dots per inch.

This makes the text look very sharp on the page. It is a wonderful tool for sharing ideas through paper.
