Wallpaper is a way to decorate the inside walls of homes and public buildings.

It is usually sold in long rolls. You apply it to a wall using a special wallpaper paste. Some paper is just plain, which is called lining paper. This type helps cover small bumps or marks on a wall. Other types have patterns that repeat over and over. This repeating part is called a pattern repeat. Designers make sure the pieces fit together so you cannot see the joins.

There are many ways to make wallpaper. Some people use hand-painting or stencilling. Another way is woodblock printing, which uses carved wood. In the past, people also used machine printing. Today, we use many new methods like digital printing. There is also a method called rotogravure. You can even find modern wallpaper with LED lights built inside!

These lights can change the mood of a room.

Long ago, very rich people used tapestries to decorate walls. These were large pieces of cloth. They added color and helped keep stone rooms warm. However, tapestries were very expensive. Many people turned to wallpaper to brighten their rooms instead. In 1515, a huge print called The Triumphal Arch was made. It was made of 192 sheets. It was even hand-colored.

England and France were leaders in making wallpaper. In 1712, England even had a tax on wallpaper. By the mid-1700s, Britain was the top maker in Europe. In 1785, Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf made the first machine for colored tints. Later, in 1799, Louis-Nicolas Robert patented a machine for long rolls of paper. In the 1800s, steam-powered machines helped make wallpaper much cheaper. This meant even working-class people could afford it.

Wallpaper has changed many times through history. In China, high-quality wallpaper was hand-painted. It was very expensive and used in grand palaces. In France, famous makers like Joseph Dufour et Cie made huge scenic patterns. One famous design showed the voyages of Captain Cook. It was 20 strips wide! Today, digital printing lets designers use new art and technology. It remains a popular way to make a room feel special.
