Some artists use spray paint robots to make physical paintings. Most people make pictorial art using pixels on a computer screen. These pixels are tiny dots that build an image. This method can mimic old styles of painting and illustration. Artists often use a graphics tablet instead of a mouse.

A tablet lets them draw by hand with a pen. This helps them feel more control over their work.

Making digital art involves using special software and tools. An artist might use a tablet to send directions to a computer. This tells the computer exactly where the pen moves. Some programs use pixels to create colors and shapes. Other tools use Bezier curves to make very detailed drawings. These curves are used in programs like Adobe Illustrator. In recent years, many people use web-based painting programs too. These programs often live on a website server. Some even use your web browser to help with the work.

The history of digital art began many years ago. In 1963, Ivan Sutherland created a program called Sketchpad. He was a student at MIT at that time. Sketchpad let users move objects on a screen. Later, the RAND company made a tablet in 1968. In 1984, a program called MacPaint arrived on the Apple Lisa. It was a very popular way to draw freely. In 1987, Thomas Knoll created a program called Display. His brother John helped him turn it into Photoshop. This program eventually became a top tool for artists.

Many different programs help people create digital art today. Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator are two very famous ones. In 1988, Craig Hickman made Kid Pix for children. It was special because it used color and sound. Another program called Krita started in 1998. It is free and helps people make 2D animations. In 1991, Mark Zimmer and Tom Hedges made Corel Painter. There are also many tools for mobile devices like iPadOS. These include apps like Procreate and ArtRage. Each tool offers different ways to paint and draw.

Digital painting is used in many parts of our world. Film makers use it to design characters and scenes. They use matte painting to make backgrounds that look real. Video game artists use it to plan how a game looks. They create a visual blueprint for the game's design. Advertising companies also use digital art to grab attention. Even book covers are often made with these tools.

An artist named Rick Berry even made the first digital book cover. He did this for a novel called Neuromancer.
