Graphics are visual images or designs made on a surface.

You might find them on a wall, a canvas, or a digital screen. People use graphics to inform, illustrate, or entertain others. They can be very simple, like a single symbol or number. They can also be very complex, like a detailed map. Sometimes, graphics combine text, color, and drawings together. They help us understand the world through our eyes.

Designers use them to create a specific style or to communicate clearly.

There are many different ways to make graphics. An artist might use a tool to make marks on paper. This is how drawing works by applying pressure to a surface. Some people use etching, which is a way to make prints. In etching, a person uses acid to eat into a metal plate. This leaves lines behind that can be used for printing.

Engineers use special technical drawings to show how to build parts. These drawings follow strict rules so everyone understands the design. Other graphics, like charts, use numbers to show information. These help us see how different pieces of data relate to each other.

Humans have been making graphics for a very long time. The oldest ones are cave paintings found from the Upper Palaeolithic period. These were made between 40,000 and 10,000 B.C. or even earlier.

People used bone, ivory, and stone to record seasonal details. In Egypt, people used papyrus to plan the building of pyramids. About 6,000 years ago, people used stone tablets to keep records. The Greeks also used graphics to show their math theories. They drew shapes to explain ideas like the Pythagorean theorem.

Today, many graphics are made using powerful computers. These are called computer graphics. There are two main types: raster and vector. Raster graphics use tiny dots called pixels to make an image. Vector graphics use math formulas to draw very sharp lines.

In 1950, the first computer display was used at MIT. Later, in 1962, Ivan Sutherland invented a program called Sketchpad. By the 1980s, artists used personal computers for design work. Video games also began using 3D graphics during this time. In 1995, the movie Toy Story became the first full-length computer-animated film.

Graphics are part of almost everything we see today. You can find them in textbooks to explain hard ideas. You see them in newspapers as editorial cartoons to share messages.

Even on the internet, we use small graphics called GIFs. Modern web browsers show many types of images like JPEGs or PNGs. We use icons and symbols to navigate our computer screens easily. Whether it is a photo of a flower or a complex 3D game, graphics help us share ideas. They turn information into something we can see and enjoy.
