A document is a way to show a thought. It can be a true fact or a made-up story. The word comes from a Latin word that means "teaching."

Long ago, people used documents to prove the truth. Today, the word covers many things. It can be a paper note or a computer file. These files can have colors, fonts, and images. Documents help us share history, events, and even our own creativity.

There are many ways to make a document. Some are very organized, like a list or a chart. These are called structured documents. A book or a newspaper is semi-structured. A simple handwritten note is unstructured.

People also use templates to help them draft new ones. When someone makes a copy, the first one is called the "original." Documents can be private, public, or even secret.

Humans have found many ways to keep records through history. In ancient Egypt, people wrote on papyrus. In Mesopotamia, people used clay tablets. They would stamp or carve the clay and then bake it.

Others used parchment or stone. They might scratch runes into stone or use a sharp tool. Some people rolled their papers into scrolls. Others cut sheets and bound them into a book called a codex.

Many different jobs use documents every single day. Scientists use manuscripts, papers, and technical drawings.

In business, people use invoices, contracts, and spreadsheets. Lawyers use documents as evidence in court. They might even use "Bates numbering" to give each page a special ID number. Even maps are documents. A topographic map or an architectural plan helps people understand the world.

In our modern world, we use digital technology to create documents. We can see them on a laptop, a tablet, or a computer monitor.

Some people use e-book devices or even electronic paper. These files often use a format called a PDF. A scientist named Suzanne Briet had an interesting idea about this. She said an antelope in the wild is not a document. But if it is captured for a zoo to study, it becomes a document. It becomes physical evidence for the people watching it.
