A documentary film is a special kind of movie that shows real life.

Instead of making up stories, these films document reality. They are often used for teaching or keeping a history record. Some documentaries are purely educational for use in schools. Others are observational, meaning they watch things happen as they are. Some even use docufiction, which adds dramatic storytelling to true events. Filmmakers have a big job to be truthful to their vision. They must not intentionally misrepresent the topics they film.

Making a documentary is a complex thing that happens in many steps. Filmmakers use media devices and different production strategies to tell their stories. They must make many choices about content and form along the way. This process can be used for journalism or to share a personal view. It can also be used for advocacy, which means supporting a cause. The practice involves solving creative and ethical problems as the film is made. This helps the filmmaker share a specific message alongside the facts.

Documentary films grew from much older ways of sharing knowledge. Before movies, people used documentary photography to show historical events. For example, Mathew Brady took photos during the American Civil War. Early films were called "actuality films" and were very short.

Most of these lasted only one minute or less. They showed simple things like a train entering a station. In 1898, Bolesław Matuszewski wrote about the historical value of film.

He even suggested making a Film Archive to keep these records safe.

Many famous names helped shape how we watch documentaries today. The word "documentary" was first used by John Grierson in 1926.

He wrote it in a review of the film Moana. Another filmmaker, Robert Flaherty, made the famous film Nanook of the North in 1922. Flaherty used a style called romanticism by staging some scenes. He had his subjects use harpoons instead of shotguns to look more traditional. In Bucharest, Professor Gheorghe Marinescu made science films about neurology between 1898 and 1901.

These films were called "studies with the help of the cinematograph."

Today, documentaries are easier to find than ever before. You can watch them on social media sites like YouTube or Dailymotion.

These platforms help films spread to many people at once. This makes it easy for audiences to access new ideas. Online sharing can even help films get past hurdles like censorship. Documentaries bring us new perspectives that we might not find in books. They connect us to the real world through moving images.
