Television documentaries are media productions that share true stories on our screens.

They can come in two main forms. Some are single films shown on news or documentary channels. Others are series, often called docuseries, which are collections of two or more episodes. Sometimes, a film made for TV is even shown in a cinema. These shows matter because they help us explore the world around us. They can teach us about history, nature, or even famous people.

Making these shows has changed a lot over time.

In the early days, the work was very slow. Makers used sixteen millimetre film cameras on heavy tripods. They had to record sound separately using a quarter inch recorder and microphones. Later, new tools made things much easier. In the 1970s, the Sony Portapak video camera helped people film in new ways. By the 1980s, portable camcorders like the Sony Betacam arrived.

These tools were light and helped makers capture much more footage for less money.

Documentary filmmaking has a long and interesting history. It grew from earlier ways of sharing news, like radio and photojournalism. In 1898, a man named Bolesław Matuszewski called documentary film a "new source of history." Television documentaries really began to grow in the 1940s. The BBC launched the first high-definition public television service on November 2, 1936. After World War II ended, regular broadcasting resumed in 1946. Pioneers like Duncan Ross and Ramsay Short helped bring filmmaking styles to the new world of television.

Different types of documentaries have become popular in different eras. In the 1950s, many shows focused on the military or history. The 1960s were known as a "Golden Age" for documentaries in the United States. During this time, shows about nature and wildlife became very popular.

One famous series, Royal Family, was watched by 40 million people in 1969. Later, in the early 2000s, special channels like National Geographic and The History Channel appeared. Today, we can even find documentaries on streaming services like Netflix.

Even though they are helpful, documentaries can sometimes cause big debates. People sometimes argue about whether a show is being fair or completely honest. Some people worry that digital editing might change how an event looks. There are also debates about whether shows are made for learning or just for drama. Some shows even include interactive links that let you click to learn more. These are called interactive documentaries, or i-docs. They show how much the way we learn and watch stories has changed.
