These rooms are used for live TV or recordings. Some shows go onto video tape. Others use SSDs to save the data. A studio can also capture raw footage for later work. The design comes from movie studios. However, TV studios have special needs. Most professional studios use several different rooms. These rooms stay separate to block noise. People in the rooms talk using an intercom called a talkback.

The studio floor is the actual stage. This is where the action happens. It has sets and decorations for the show. Many professional video cameras sit on pedestals here. Bright stage lights shine down from rigs. Microphones catch all the sound. There are also monitors to show what is happening. A floor manager leads the area. They take timing news from the director. Camera operators move the cameras to get the best shots. Sometimes, they use robotic PTZ heads to move cameras from far away.

The production control room is where the show is built. People call this the PCR. Sometimes, people call it a gallery. This name comes from the BBC's first studio at Alexandra Palace. There, the director sat on a bridge like a minstrels' gallery. Most of the tools in the PCR connect to equipment in another room. This room is for making choices about the show. It is where the final program is composed. This helps the show look just right for viewers.

Some machines are too loud or hot for the PCR. These stay in the central apparatus room. This room is called the CAR. It holds the main wires and connections. These wires include coax, SDI, or fibre-optic cables. The CAR holds many important tools. It has a character generator, which adds text to the screen. It also has video servers and a vision mixer. The vision mixer helps switch between different camera views. This keeps the show moving smoothly for the audience.

Other rooms help the people working on the show. There are make-up and changing rooms to get ready. A reception area is for visitors and the crew. This area is often called a green room. There is also a space for an audience. The master control room is the final technical hub. In US stations, this is where the on-air signal is controlled. It can play pre-recorded shows or commercials. It also watches the satellite feeds. If a show is live, the signal goes from the PCR to master control. Then, it goes out to the transmitter.
