Closed-circuit television, or CCTV, is a way to send video signals to a specific place.

Unlike regular broadcast television, the signal is not sent out for everyone to see. Instead, it travels to a limited set of monitors. The signal can move through wires or through wireless links.

This technology is often called video surveillance. It is used to monitor areas that need extra security. It can also help people watch parts of a factory that are too dangerous for humans.

In the past, these systems worked in a very simple way. The earliest cameras could not save any video. This meant people had to watch the screens all the time. Later, scientists developed reel-to-reel media to help.

Workers had to change magnetic tapes by hand. This was a hard job because they had to thread the tape through the machine. In the 1970s, videocassette recorders made it much easier to save and erase video. By the 1990s, digital multiplexing allowed many cameras to record at once. Today, many cameras are IP cameras. These use computer networks to save video directly to digital storage.

People have been building these systems for a long time. A Russian physicist named Leon Theremin made an early mechanical system in June 1927.

It used a wireless transmitter and had a resolution of one hundred lines. In 1942, a company called Siemens AG installed a system in Nazi Germany. They used it to watch the launch of V-2 rockets. The first commercial system in the United States arrived in 1949. It was called "Vericon" and was designed by CBS Laboratories. It used cables to connect the camera to the monitor.

CCTV has been used for many different things over the years. Between 1960 and 1965, the Metropolitan Police installed cameras in London. In 1963, Munich used them to watch traffic. People even used CCTV to watch sports like boxing and wrestling.

In 1974, 50 million people watched the "Rumble in the Jungle" fight through these systems. In 1975, the "Thrilla in Manila" fight drew 100 million viewers. In 1968, Olean, New York, became the first U.S. city to put cameras on a main business street.

Marie Van Brittan Brown even patented a home security system using CCTV in 1969.

Today, the use of these cameras is a big topic of debate. Many people use them to help prevent crime in banks and stores.

Some studies show that cameras can reduce crime by 24 to 28 percent in streets and subway stations. However, other studies show that cameras might not be as helpful in parking lots. There is also a big debate about privacy. People wonder how to balance safety with the right to be private in public. Some cities even use systems that can recognize facial features.
