True crime is a special type of non-fiction storytelling. It focuses on real events involving crimes. Authors look closely at what happened during these events. They study the people who were involved or affected. They also try to find the reasons why a person committed a crime.

Some writers use a journalistic style. This means they focus mostly on known facts. Other writers use a speculative style. This means they share their own personal ideas about the crime. These stories can be very intense. They often deal with serious topics like murder or serial killers.

There are many ways to enjoy true crime stories today. You can read them in books or magazines. You can also watch them in television series and documentaries. Some documentaries even use reenactments to show what happened.

Digital media is also very popular now. People listen to true crime podcasts or watch videos on the internet. A series can be an anthology of many different stories. Or, it can follow just one single case in a serialized format. This means the story is told in parts over a long time.

People have been interested in crime stories for a very long time. In the 16th century, China had stories called gong'an xiaoshuo. These were based on actual accounts. Between 1550 and 1700, many small papers called pamphlets were sold in Britain. People bought them to read about murders. In 1807, Henry Tufts published a biography of an American criminal. Later, in 1889, a lawyer named William Roughead wrote about murder trials for sixty years. Many people call him the dean of the modern true crime genre.
