Biographical film

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A biographical film is often called a biopic. These movies tell the life story of a real person. Sometimes they tell the story of a group of people. A biopic uses the real name of the person it shows. These films try to cover a whole life. They might focus on the most important years. This makes them different from other historical dramas.

Acting in these films is a very hard job. Actors must show the person's true character. They must also try to look like the real person. This is called casting. Casting can sometimes cause big arguments. People might disagree if an actor looks too different. For example, John Wayne played Genghis Khan in The Conqueror. Some people did not like this choice. They felt an American actor should not play a Mongol leader.

Scholars study how these movies are made. George F. Custen studied how Hollywood made public history. He thought the biopic style died with the studio era. Dennis P. Bingham wrote a study in 2010. He says the genre still lives on today. He notes that male and female biopics can be different. Male biopics often show great accomplishments. Female biopics sometimes focus on being a victim.

Many famous actors gained respect through biopics. Ben Kingsley played Mahatma Gandhi in the 1982 film Gandhi. Johnny Depp played Ed Wood in 1994. Jim Carrey played Andy Kaufman in 1999. Robert Downey Jr. played Charlie Chaplin in 1992. More recently, Cillian Murphy played J. Robert Oppenheimer in 2023. Some movies even change the truth to tell a story. The film The Doors used made-up scenes. It was about the singer Jim Morrison.

Sometimes the real person plays themselves. These are called auto biopics. Muhammad Ali played himself in The Greatest in 1977. Jackie Robinson was in his own story in 1950. These films can be very successful. In 2018, Bohemian Rhapsody was a huge hit. It told the story of Freddie Mercury from Queen. Then, the movie Oppenheimer became the highest-grossing biopic in 2023. It showed the creation of the atomic bomb.
