Method acting

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Method acting is a special way that actors practice. It is a group of techniques used during rehearsal. These methods help actors give sincere and expressive performances. Instead of just pretending, they try to find a character's inner feelings. They want to understand the reasons why a character acts a certain way.

This helps the actor feel the story from the inside. It makes the performance feel much more real to the audience.

There are different ways to make these feelings happen. One way is to search for a character's inner motives. This helps an actor understand a specific task in a scene. Another way is called the Method of Physical Action. This method uses physical movements to help the actor work. Some actors use their own past memories to find emotions. Others use their imagination to create "as if" situations.

They imagine a new situation to help them react correctly.

This way of acting began with Konstantin Stanislavski. He was a Russian actor and director. He lived from 1863 to 1938. He organized his ideas into a system during the early 1900s. He wrote books like An Actor Prepares and Building a Character.

He wanted actors to use the art of experiencing. This is different from just showing a character to an audience. He believed that acting should come from deep inside.

These ideas traveled to the United States in the 1920s. Students like Richard Boleslawski and Maria Ouspenskaya moved there. They helped start the American Laboratory Theatre. Later, Lee Strasberg developed the style known as "the Method." He taught many famous people like Marlon Brando and Al Pacino.

Other teachers like Stella Adler had different ideas. She taught actors like Robert De Niro and Warren Beatty. She preferred using imagination over using personal memories.

Many famous actors have used these techniques in movies. You might recognize names like Marilyn Monroe or Jack Nicholson. Some actors go very far to prepare for a role. Dustin Hoffman once stayed up all night to match a character. This can sometimes be hard for other actors to work with. Some people think Method acting is like a photograph. Others think real acting should be more like an oil painting.
