She was part of the Adler acting dynasty. This family was a big part of the Yiddish Theater scene in New York. This theater scene was very lively from the late 1800s to the 1950s. Stella was the youngest daughter of Sara and Jacob P. Adler. She began her career at only four years old. She performed in a play called Broken Hearts at the Grand Street Theatre. Growing up, she often played roles as both boys and girls.

Stella had a very special way of teaching acting. She believed actors should use their imagination to find a character. She did not want them to just use their own memories. Instead, she wanted them to study the "given circumstances." This means they study the details in the script. For example, if a character rides a horse, the actor should learn about horses. She also taught that acting is split into two equal parts. Half of the job is internal, like using your will and emotions. The other half is external, like how you walk or use your voice.

Her journey into teaching began after she studied with great masters. She saw the Russian actor Konstantin Stanislavski perform in the United States. In 1934, she traveled to Paris to study with him for five weeks. During this time, she learned his new ideas about imagination. She later joined the Group Theatre in New York in 1931. This group included people like Sanford Meisner and Elia Kazan. Stella eventually left the group because she disagreed with Lee Strasberg. She felt his way of acting was different from what Stanislavski taught.

Stella lived a long and full life. She died in Los Angeles in 1992 at the age of 91.

Her work changed how people act in movies and plays. She taught actors to be "worthy of the stage." This meant they should have a strong presence and clear voices. She often told her students, "don't be boring." She wanted them to make big, bold choices. One of her favorite sayings was, "in your choices lies your talent." Her ideas helped actors understand the feelings of people from different cultures. Because of her, actors can bring many different kinds of people to life on stage.
