He was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 1891. He was the nephew of the well-known writer Anton Chekhov. Chekhov studied under Konstantin Stanislavski at the First Studio. Stanislavski thought Chekhov was his most brilliant student. He spent much of his life working in the theatre. He also appeared in movies, like the film Spellbound in 1945. This role earned him an Academy Award nomination.

Chekhov created a special way to train actors. He wanted them to find their creative selves. He taught many different movement styles to his students. These included ways of moving like molding, floating, or flying. He also used a tool called the Psychological Gesture. This is a physical move that shows a character's inner needs. An actor does the move on the outside first. Then, they keep the feeling inside to help their performance. This helps an actor show deep feelings without just acting them out.

His life took him to many different countries. He studied in Russia and worked in Moscow. After the October Revolution, he traveled with his own company. He moved to Germany in the late 1920s to teach. He also worked in Lithuania at the Kaunas State Drama Theatre. Between 1936 and 1939, he started a school in England. Later, he moved to the United States to build a new drama school. He lived in America until he passed away in 1955.

Chekhov wrote important books about his ideas. One book is called On the Technique of Acting. He wrote it in 1942 to explain his work. He also wrote an autobiography called The Path of the Actor. Many famous actors have studied his books to learn how to act.

Even modern stars like Johnny Depp and Anthony Hopkins have used his books. His work remains a big part of how people learn acting today.

Many famous stars were once his students. These include Marilyn Monroe and Clint Eastwood. Other famous names are Dorothy Dandridge and Yul Brynner. Even actors like Jack Palance and Elia Kazan learned from him. His teaching helped many people find their way in Hollywood. Many people still use his methods to become great performers. His legacy lives on through the many actors he helped train.
