He was a leader in modern theatre because he loved to experiment. Instead of making plays look exactly like real life, he used symbols. He wanted to find new ways to stage stories. His work changed how people thought about the stage. He was a very important force in international theatre.

Meyerhold created a unique way to train actors called biomechanics. This was a system of physical movement. He believed that an actor's body and mind were linked. Instead of just thinking about a feeling, actors used gestures. They used specific poses to show deep emotions. He also used circus-style effects in his productions. These methods made his shows feel very energetic and new.

His life became very hard due to the government. In the 1930s, leaders in the Soviet Union wanted art to be simple. They did not like his experimental style. They called his work "formalist," which meant they thought he cared too much about form. His theatre was closed by order of the government in 1938. In June 1939, the police arrested him. He was executed on February 2, 1940.
