He was also a great traveler who loved to see new things. He helped start a movement for poets called Acmeism. This group believed that writing poetry required great skill and hard work. They thought a poem should be built with care, much like a large cathedral.

This idea helped many young writers learn how to craft beautiful words.

Gumilev was very interested in the world outside of Russia. He traveled to Africa almost every year to explore. During his trips, he sometimes hunted lions and studied the land. He even helped with developments in Ethiopia. He collected many African items to share with others.

He gave a large collection of these artifacts to a museum in Saint Petersburg. His book, The Tent, collected his best poems about these African themes.

His life was full of many important people and events. He was born in the town of Kronstadt on Kotlin Island. He studied at a school where a poet named Innokenty Annensky taught him. This teacher helped him decide to become a writer.

Gumilev married the famous poet Anna Akhmatova in 1910. They had a son named Lev Gumilev. Lev grew up to be a well-known historian.

Gumilev also served his country during World War I. He joined an elite group of cavalry soldiers. He fought in places like East Prussia and Macedonia. Because he was so brave, he was given two St. George crosses.

He even wrote a play called Gondla about old Iceland. This play was very successful when it was performed in Rostov na Donu in 1920.

In 1921, the Soviet police arrested Gumilev. They executed him on August 26 in the Kovalevsky Forest. This was a very sad time for his friends and family. Even after his death, his words stayed important to many people.
