Zinaida had a very unique way of working and living. She began writing poetry when she was only seven years old. She often treated her poems like private, personal prayers. To share her ideas about culture, she sometimes used a man's name. She used the name Anton Krainy to write her essays. This helped her reach people in a different way. She even used male clothes to create a specific image. This helped her stand out in the crowded world of writers.

Her life changed a lot because of her marriage and her home. She married the writer Dmitry Merezhkovsky in 1889 in Tiflis. The two made a pact to focus on different writing styles. Dmitry focused on poetry, while Zinaida focused on prose. They lived in a famous building called the Muruzi House in Saint Petersburg. This home became a center for many important thinkers. They worked together to bring art and religion closer. This was a major part of their shared life and work.

Zinaida's life was shaped by many big events and places. She was born in Belyov, Russia, to a family with German roots. Her father was a lawyer and a high officer in the Senate. After her father died, the family moved to places like Yalta and Tiflis. She published her first book of poems in 1903. This book was called Collection of Poems. 1889–1903. She also wrote stories like Moon Ants in 1912. Her work was eventually translated into French and German.

Political changes in Russia forced Zinaida to move many times. She and Dmitry became critics of the Russian government. After the 1917 Revolution, they left Russia to live in other lands. They lived in Poland, France, and finally Italy. Even while living far from home, she stayed active in writing circles. She wrote memoirs about the sadness of being an exile. Dmitry died in 1941, which was a very hard time for her. Zinaida passed away a few years later in 1945.
