Jerzy Grotowski was a famous theatre director from Poland.

He changed how people think about acting and performance. Many people call him a father of experimental theatre. This means he tried very new and unusual ways to make plays. He wanted to find the very root of what theatre is. He believed that theatre should focus on the actor and the audience. This connection is what makes the art feel alive and real.

His most famous idea was called "poor theatre." This name does not mean the theatre was bad or lacked quality. Instead, it meant the theatre did not need fancy things. He did not use many props, which are objects used on stage. He also avoided using big sets or special lighting effects. In one play, the actors used their own bodies to represent objects. In another play, he seated the audience members as guests at a table. This made the crowd feel like they were part of the story.

Grotowski began his journey in Poland in the 1930s. He was born in a place called Rzeszów in 1933. He studied acting and directing in Kraków and also in Moscow. He made his first appearance as a director in 1957. Shortly after, he started a small laboratory theatre in Opole in 1959. In 1965, he moved his group to Wrocław. They called themselves the Teatr Laboratorium to avoid strict rules in Poland. His work became famous all over the world during the 1960s.

Many important plays showed his unique style to the world. His production of Akropolis was a major success for him. In this play, actors represented prisoners in a camp. Another famous play was The Constant Prince, which debuted in 1967. He also worked very hard with an actor named Ryszard Cieslak. Grotowski wrote a book called Towards a Poor Theatre with Ludwik Flaszen. This book helped people in many countries understand his ideas. He even traveled to the United States to teach at Columbia University.

Later in his life, Grotowski looked for new ways to learn. He traveled to places like India, Mexico, and Haiti. He wanted to see how different cultures used traditional movements. He studied these rituals to see how they affected people. Eventually, he moved to Italy and started a workcenter in Pontedera. He spent his final years working on private theatrical events. Grotowski passed away in 1999 at his home in Italy.
