Jacques Lecoq was a famous French actor and a teacher of movement. He believed that the way a body moves can be like poetry. Lecoq was unique because he had a background in sports and sports rehabilitation. As a teenager, he loved running, swimming, and gymnastics. He started gymnastics at age seventeen and studied the bars. This helped him see the geometry of how bodies move through space. He felt that the rhythms of athletics were very powerful.

Lecoq taught his students to find their own creative paths. He did not want to give them a set of strict rules. Instead, he used a method called "via negativa," or the negative way. In this method, he only pointed out what was not working. He believed students should discover the right way on their own. This encouraged them to keep trying new ways to express themselves. He wanted actors to create their own work rather than just reading scripts.

To help students learn, Lecoq used many different kinds of masks. They started with a neutral mask that had a soft face. This mask had no past and no specific feelings. It helped students stay open to everything happening around them. Next, they used larval masks to help their imagination grow. They also used expressive masks to show specific emotions. The very last step was using a small red clown nose. Lecoq believed that studying the clown was a way to study yourself.

Lecoq's journey into theatre began with many important people. He studied at Bagatelle college near Paris starting in 1937. He met a basketball player named Jean Marie Conty in 1941. Conty helped connect the worlds of sport and theatre. Lecoq also worked with the company Comediens de Grenoble. He lived in Italy for eight years to study Commedia dell'arte. This is an old style of acting using masks and physical movement. He even performed with the famous clown and writer Dario Fo.

In 1956, Lecoq opened his school in Paris. It was named the École internationale de théâtre Jacques Lecoq. In 1976, the school moved to a place called Le Central. This building used to be a boxing center. Lecoq chose it because it reminded him of his sports career. His school trained many famous people like the performers from Cirque du Soleil. He also taught skills like "le jeu," which means playfulness. He wanted actors to be playful and work together with others.
