Jacques Lecoq was a famous actor and teacher from France. He loved sports like gymnastics and swimming. He saw the beauty in how bodies move. He called this movement a kind of physical poetry. In 1956, he opened a special school in Paris. It was called the École internationale de théâtre Jacques Lecoq.

Lecoq taught students to find their own creative ways. He did not just give them a set of rules. He often used a method called "via negativa." This means he only pointed out what was not working. He wanted students to find the right way themselves.

He used many different masks to help his students. First, they used a neutral mask. This mask has a soft face and no past. It helps actors stay open to the whole world. Later, they used expressive masks to show big feelings. The last step was the most personal. Students used a small red clown nose. Lecoq believed that studying the clown helps you study yourself. He wanted actors to be playful and work well together. His school helped many famous actors and performers around the world.
