He changed how people think about acting. He is known as a father of experimental theatre. This means he tried new and unusual ways to make plays.

Grotowski created a style called "poor theatre." In this style, the actors are the most important part. He did not use many props, which are objects used on stage. Instead, he let the actors use their bodies to represent things. In one play, actors used their bodies to act as objects. In another, they sat audience members at a table. This made the crowd feel part of the story.

He also studied how different cultures use movement. He traveled to places like India, Mexico, and Haiti. He wanted to learn from traditional ways of acting and dancing. Later in life, he moved to Italy. There, he ran a center to teach his work. He worked in private for many years. Grotowski died in 1999. His ideas still help actors today.
