Roland Petit was a famous dancer from France. He was a choreographer, too. A choreographer is a person who makes up dance moves. He trained at a school for ballet in Paris. Later, he led many dance groups. He even started the Ballet National de Marseille. He led that group for 26 years.

Petit loved to work with other artists. He worked with painters to make sets for his shows. He even made a dance with the rock band Pink Floyd. He made more than 50 ballets. Some told a story, and some were just about movement. His most famous work was called Le jeune homme et la mort. It had very modern costumes.

He also worked in movies. He danced in a short film about dance history. He also made dances for films like Alice in Wonderland. Petit was a master of the pas de deux. This is a dance for two people. He won a big prize called the Prix Benois de la Danse in 1994. He died in 2011 at age 87. He died from leukemia, which is a type of sickness in the blood.
